The Link Between COVID-19 and Oral Hygiene

We’re all aware of the importance of general hygiene during COVID-19 to protect ourselves and avoid spreading germs to others. However, a recent study completed by Dr. Shervin Molayem and Dr. Carla Pontes has shown that oral hygiene is more crucial than ever due to a new link discovered between gum disease and COVID-19.

As Dr. Molayem, an American dental surgeon, explains, “Gum disease has been linked to other breathing ailments, including pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, so we weren’t surprised to find a link to respiratory problems with COVID-19.” Essentially, if a patient’s gums become inflamed, the inflammatory bacteria can then be breathed in, causing infections such as pneumonia that can also serve as a breeding ground for the virus.

To protect your oral hygiene during this time, be sure to brush and floss your teeth regularly and drink plenty of water. Additionally, adjust your diet to minimize your sugar intake. Most important of all, however, is to ensure that you are getting regular professional cleanings!

We are currently open and taking all necessary precautions to prioritize the safety of both our patients and our staff. Call our office at 210-877-2273to set up an appointment today!
