More about our dental bonding procedure

The Procedure

During a dental bonding or teeth bonding procedure, the dentist first helps you chose a shade of composite resin that matches the color of your teeth in a cosmetic dental office.

Then the surface of the tooth is roughened and a conditioning liquid is put on to help the bonding material attach to the tooth. The putty-like resin is then applied, molded like clay and smoothed to the correct shape. An ultraviolet light hardens the material. The dentist finishes up with trimming, shaping and polishing the tooth to match the other teeth. This procedure is quite typical at your cosmetic and family dentistry office.

The Risks

As with any dental procedure, there are some risks associated with dental bonding such as sometimes the bonding may chip, but it can be easily fixed and usually lasts for 3-10 years. Also dental bonds are not as stain-resistant as crowns, but most stains can be avoided through good dental hygiene.

Costs

The cost of dental bonding depends on the amount of dental work completed, and other factors. Our San Antonio cosmetic dentistry Dentists will gladly talk with you about this option and make it work for you.

Dental Bonding FAQ’s

How is dental bonding different from a veneer?

Bonding involves the resin being placed onto the tooth’s surface to strengthen it or alter the shape. It’s quicker and less expensive than a veneer. Porcelain veneers are carefully made in a dental lab and then the dentist will bond the thin layer of porcelain to the tooth. Veneers might last a few years longer since they are made of porcelain.

How should I care for my dental bonding?

They should be maintained the same way as your other teeth by following good dental hygiene: brushing twice, and flossing once each day, and having regular dental check-ups.

Should I choose bonding over fillings?

Bonding does have advantages over fillings. The composite resin adheres directly to the tooth, and is more structurally solid. Composites can be color-matched to existing teeth more than fillings. But there is a little more additional cost than with fillings.
